Grab vs Gojek in Bali — Everything You Need to Know Before You Arrive
Getting around Bali is one of those things that sounds complicated before you arrive and turns out to be surprisingly straightforward once you’re there. The key is knowing about two apps: Grab and Gojek. We used both extensively during our time in Bali — cars, bikes, everything — and here’s what you actually need to know.
📱 What Are Grab and Gojek?
Think of them as Bali’s version of Uber. Both are ride-hailing apps that let you book a car or motorbike taxi directly from your phone, with upfront pricing, no negotiating, and full route tracking. They’re the single best way for tourists to get around Bali — cheaper than conventional taxis, more transparent, and far less stressful than haggling with drivers at the roadside.

🚗 Car vs Motorbike — Which to Choose?
Both apps offer two main options: a car (GrabCar / GoCar) or a motorbike taxi (GrabBike / GoRide). Here’s how to decide:
🏍️ Choose a motorbike (bike taxi) when:
- You’re travelling solo or as a couple with minimal luggage
- Traffic is bad and you want to get there faster
- It’s a short trip — bikes weave through Bali’s notorious traffic far more efficiently
- You want the cheapest option
🚗 Choose a car when:
- You have luggage
- You’re travelling in a group of 3 or more
- It’s raining (Bali rain is serious)
- You’re doing a longer journey
One important tip: if you have luggage or are more than 3 people, always book a GrabXL or GoXL (the larger car option). Regular car drivers will sometimes refuse the ride or get frustrated if you show up with too much luggage for a standard car — the size upgrade is worth it and the price difference is small.
🏍️ Our Experience on the Motorbike Taxi
Yes, we took the motorbike taxi in Bali — and it’s a genuinely great way to get around. Helmets are provided, the drivers know the roads well, and for short hops around Seminyak or Ubud it’s by far the fastest option. Bali traffic can be brutal in a car; on a bike, you simply filter through it.
Just hold on, trust the driver, and enjoy the breeze. It’s part of the Bali experience.
💰 How Much Does It Cost?
💰 Typical Fares (approximate)
- Short ride 3–5 km: IDR 15,000–30,000 ($1–2 USD)
- Airport → Seminyak / Kuta: IDR 120,000–180,000 ($8–12 USD)
- Seminyak → Ubud: IDR 200,000–350,000 ($15–25 USD)
- Motorbike rides: generally 40–50% cheaper than car
💡 Tips for Using Grab and Gojek in Bali
✅ Our Top Tips
- Install both apps — compare prices before booking, they differ more than you’d expect
- Check both when surge pricing hits — they don’t always surge at the same time
- Always verify the driver — check the plate number and driver photo match before getting in
- Set pickup pin accurately — use a clear landmark or entrance, not just the middle of the road
- Tip your driver — drivers work hard for low fares; a small cash tip is always appreciated
- Walk out of no-ride zones — some areas have local taxi mafias that block app pickups; walk 200m and try again
- Book GrabXL or GoXL with luggage — avoid the awkward conversation with a driver who can’t fit your bags
- Grab is easier for international cards — if Gojek won’t accept your card, use Grab or pay cash
⚠️ Things to Be Aware Of
- Airport pickups — app cars are not officially allowed at Ngurah Rai Airport departures. Walk to the public road outside and request your ride from there
- Ubud coverage is limited — fewer drivers available; some areas require private drivers for full-day trips
- Northern Bali — very limited coverage; don’t rely on apps here
- Some hotels restrict pickups — walk to the nearest street if your driver can’t reach the entrance
We had both apps installed throughout our time in Bali — and we used both. The trick is simple: when one is surging or showing longer wait times, switch to the other. There were moments when Grab was 30–40% more expensive than Gojek for the exact same route, and vice versa. Takes ten seconds to check both, and the savings add up over a trip.
🆚 Our Verdict — Grab or Gojek?
Install both. Use whichever is cheaper at the time. For car rides, we slightly prefer Grab for its reliability and international card compatibility. For motorbike rides, Gojek’s GoRide is excellent — the drivers tend to use the app exclusively, which means faster pickup times.
Between the two, you’ll have everything you need to get around Bali comfortably, affordably, and without ever having to negotiate a fare at the roadside. Which, if you’ve ever tried to negotiate a taxi in Bali, you’ll know is a very good thing.

Gojek: Available on the App Store and Google Play — search “Gojek”
Set up your account and link your payment method before you land — it saves time at the airport.
⚠️ Important: Register your credit card before you arrive in Bali. Both apps can be finicky about accepting foreign cards when you’re already in Indonesia — setting up payment in advance saves a lot of frustration at the worst possible time.
